What is a Scarecrow Festival?

Scarecrow Festivals are held in several towns and villages across Ireland and

around the world, and are a fun way to involve all in the community.

Scarecrows have long protected crops from birds.

birds. In recent years many communities have begun to hold Scarecrow Festivals as a

way of bringing different groups, businesses, schools and residents together and bring

back the “community feel” that seems to have been lost in an era of technology and

busy working families.

Ideas and Inspiration

Please use recycled materials where possible

There are all sorts of shapes and sizes of scarecrow, ranging from window displays to

large groups of individual scarecrows, depending on the space and time that you have

and your imagination. Google “Scarecrow Festivals” for inspiration.

The idea is to make a scarecrow that represents you and what you do. So, a school

could make a class of wooden spoon scarecrows with a teacher, or a church could

have a wedding theme. A garage could have a mechanic under a car bonnet. If you are

a family who love cartoons or a movie night, you could create Simpsons characters or

super-heroes.
